[AnimeUNSW] Kick-Off Party (KO Party) Aftermath~!

Hello all,

On behalf of AnimeUNSW’s executive team, I’d like to give my thanks to all of you who attended our first-ever KO Party! Thanks for helping us create such a wonderful event. I hope you all had fun!

Overall, we had a total attendance count of 164 people at our KO Party.
Some of the best highlights of the night were:
- AnimeUNSW’s notorious art session events
- The highly successful Street Fighter IV tournament
- The deadly trivia, which really drove the crowd mad with excitement
- All the new members for showing up and making it a great party!

I believe a special thanks goes to our Executive team for running the events, and a super special one goes to all our lovely members who provided us with the consoles and helped with set-up and pack-up duties.

Our KO Party photos shall be released on our club’s Facebook account and website some time soon, so please drop by to check them out and help us tag people.

Please assist us by giving us some constructive feedback. AnimeUNSW highly values your opinions, so we will be taking them them all into consideration for our future events.

We hope to bring you more events soon, so please look out for more details in the weekly newsletters.

Once again, thank you for attending our party and I hope to see you all at our future events!

First AnimeUNSW Screenings 2009

Who: AnimeUNSW Secretary EdJZ + AnimeUNSW Screening Director Edwin

When: 10:30am - 11:30am Wednesday 25th Feb + Thursday 26th Feb

Where: Unreel Cinema

During o-week we held the first screenings for 2009. We had a nice little turnout of eager fans ready to watch some anime. A big thanks to the Yellow shirts for the free popcorn that they supplied, I’m sure everyone liked the free popcorn :D

On the Wednesday we showed the first episodes of

Toradora!

Kurokami

Toaru Majutsu no Index

Toradora was a very funny and very cute anime. It’s basically about a nice guy who happens to have a scary face which makes people scared of him. He then meets a girl named Taiga who happens to be just as vicious as a Tiger. I thought this anime was quite amusing and it is certain to get interesting once the romance starts to get more serious.

Kurokami has some really sick action scenes, sick in that they are violent and also that they are really cool. There was some strange talk of Dopplegangers Doppleliners o-o … yeah anyways. There were a few shocking bits but overall it was quite gripping. Though the main girl was very annoying trying to act cute over ramen while kicking someones ass and taking blows to the head.

Toaru Majutsu no Index is probably my personal favourite of the days screenings. It was funny, cute and interesting. There was action that was not lame or over the top. It also leaves on a slight cliffhanger leaving people wanting more. Overall the episode was very well paced and a lot of fun to watch.

On Thursday we showed

Kuroshitsuji

Michiko to Hatchin

Koukaku no Regios

Kuroshitsuji was basically about a rich kid and his very skilled butler. I actually found this series to be a bit . . . annoying. But we all need to remember that this series is clearly created for girls and so my opinion will be biased. There were cool bits, but then there were some random humour moments which kinda shifted the mood in the wrong direction. The whole board game thing was kinda interesting.

Michiko to Hatchin was a really cool anime. The art is very different to what is normally seen coming out of Japan. The setting seems to be somewhere in Mexico, which is often not seen in Japanese anime. The action was very stylishly paced. Simple I liked this, it was eye candy and something you don’t normally see. I hope future episodes will be just as cool.

Koukaku no Regios had some pretty cool action bits but was basically set in a military high school type environment. I really enjoyed watching the first episode. There were some bits that were flashbacks where the main character owned some beast and some non-named important people stand on the side and watch, then it goes to the ‘present’ and he is trying to change his life. There were some funny bits that shifts the mood in a funny way, but all in all u just wanna see some more bug slicing action. Hopefully there will be more of that in future episodes :D

Thats my two cents regarding the stuff that I screened on those days. Apologies to the Spocsoc for taking up some of their screening time and thank you for being patient. Also a big thank you to everyone that attended the screenings.

Thanks

O-Week Wrap-up

Who: ARC Delegate/O-Week Stall Co-ordinator Nathan Bright

When: 23rd to 27th February

Where: Main Walkway, UNSW

Wow.

That. Was. Fantastic!

It should be obvious to anyone that read the title, but I’m talking about O-Week: That wonderful week of fresh, new faces, giant inflatables, and free stuff. It’s really the new faces that matter the most to us here at AnimeUNSW, so make sure you keep coming to our events and drag some friends along too!

For those that couldn’t make it to O-Week this year, we had a blast at the stall, even while we were sharing with another club at the start of the week. It was a bit of a learning experience, because a lot of this years execs hadn’t worked at a stall before, and I always manage to forget how epic everything is, but I think it went off without any problems. From the music we had from Tuesday onwards, to the things we got late from Madman to give away (And the stuff we gave out too quickly - who here got a DVD?), and even the impromptu signs we were making, I can’t think of one actual failure. And I haven’t even got the space to talk about the special events we had to show people what we’ll be doing every single week as soon as we can book rooms: The screenings, art sessions and gaming sessions. The good news is the execs that ran those will be along soon to post about them! The better news is that until we can run those, we’re having specialler(It’s a word from now on) events, like the Kick-Off (KO) Party and the joint screening with FilmSoc of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”!

To wrap things up, a huge thankyou to the execs and random people that showed up to help (Or attempt to comically hinder, like our friends from other Unis), and welcome to all the new members.

Don’t forget to pop into the forums, too. It may be confusing at first, but you’ll soon learn about everyone’s eccentricities. Be sure to leave a comment about what you thought of O-Week!

Bowling Event

Who: Co-events Director Danny Lam
Where: Entertainment Quarter
What happened: It was a cold dark afternoon at the mysteriously quiet Entertainment Quarter. The sun was hiding behind the clouds and the air was chilly. The venue was set to decide which anime culture is the best them all. The teams stood proudly at the arena, preparing themselves for a mighty battle which has warred on for decades… the Yuri team and the Yaoi team. The power struggle between the best ero ero in anime/manga will be decided in the ultimate sports battle… bowling! The fighting will be tough but the Yuri team will pervail overall…

… I wished…

Out of all honesty… the events that had been played in my head over several times never actually happened the way I had wished for. It was a great sunny day packed with people participating in the Food and wine Festival events. The Entertainment Quarter was brimming with life. The venue, Strike Bowling bar, was ideally quiet… which was good as it would save the innocent people around us from being *ahem* corrupted *ahem* by our president, Eve.

Originally, there was supposed to be two teams for bowling; Team Yuri, which was to be headed by your’s truly, and the Yaoi team, which was to be headed by the evil, evil president. However, my team was corrupted by the Yaoi team and without me knowing, the game promptly started as the Yaoi team vs Yaoi team.

Eventually, the game got extremely interesting. Each team had individuals with different playing styles. ‘Man-Slave’ screams and falls over everytime he bowls. Whatever his tactic was, it seemed to have been able to score him a few strikes. Also, The president, Inu and her partner in crime seemed to be particularly interested in the way the men held the ‘balls’ everytime the went to bowl. Lachlan, our Arts Director, showed us just how it was really done… which got all the girlspretty excited *not because it was a strike*.

In the end, I had scored the second-lowest score in the game, leaving Sabrina the wooden spoon in that match. Jesse scored the highest score, thus taking out the first place.

Like true sportsmen, all of us had headed off for dinner to recuperate after a long day. Although the events didn’t play out as I had imagined, it was however successful.

Gaming Session

When: 24/09/08
Where: Hut D10
What happened: The first Gaming Session was held at UNSW Hut D10 by Adam. The Gaming Sessions are regular events where gamers bring their NDS and PSP to play multiplayer games with each other, or they could also play the PS2 games there. We are looking forward to getting more gamers involved this session.

Greetings!
